This original framed painting captures the riparian forest at Cazenovia Creek, West Seneca, New York. This illusion series was posted to social media, beginning on the 25th of August, 2026. This painting represents sustenance and protection, the care that the forest supports the creek with.
Cazenovia Creek: Cazenovia Creek is a major tributary of the Buffalo River, which flows into Lake Erie. Long known to the Seneca as Ga-e-na-dah-daah, meaning “slate rock bottom,” the creek flowed through Seneca homelands before a series of treaties led to the loss of much of that land. In recent years, the creek has undergone several restoration efforts to help mitigate human impact.
The forest reminded me of the Rococo art period, especially The Swing painting, with sweeping trees enclosing the composition. This portion of the forest is about 0.5 miles from the creek, and even this distance away, it helps filter pollutants, absorbs excess stormwater, and supports the animals and native plants that are needed to maintain the creek’s health.
