Thawing Lagoon, Beaver Island: Framed Plein Air Color Match Illusion
This original framed painting captures the thawing lagoon of Beaver Island at a pivotal turning point in the season. This illusion series was posted to social media 24 Feb. 2026. The ice, which flowed and swirled freely from the Niagara River during the illusion, represents change, openness, new beginnings, and curiosity.
Beaver Island Lagoon: Beaver Island is a small, rocky island on Grand Island, New York, adjacent to the Niagara River. These lands were once used by the Haudenosaunee for hunting, fishing, and trading. It was an area rich with native plants and animals, although now, this has been decreased from tourism and recreation. The ice moving and changing through the illusion process reminds me of the qualities of human nature and makes me reflect on how we can use our creativity to restore natural areas around Western New York.
Key Features:
Original varnished plein air oil painting (3.3” x 2.3”) on archival Bristol board
Black frame (6.5” x 5”) custom-built for the piece
