Subject and Process: The turquoise color of the Niagara River is shaped by minerals like limestone, carried downstream from Lake Erie. I study the river throughout the year to observe these changes and chose to paint it at its most distinct seasonal state. This piece was created at the Schoellkopf Power Station Ruins, a site that gave me ground-level access to the river, where I could inspect its color closely and best connect with the subject.
Niagara River and Niagara Falls: This painting was created just a 5-minute walk from Niagara Falls, at the Schoellkopf Power Station Ruins. The Niagara River, with its vibrant turquoise waters, has shaped both the landscape and the country. The river's beauty inspired movements like the Free Niagara campaign, which fought to protect its natural wonder from industrial development. The nearby power stations now provide about 25% of the electricity for New York State and Ontario. I’m inspired by the river’s power, its history, and the generations who have worked to preserve it.
