This original framed painting features an overlook of Honeoye Lake veiled by an oak tree in Springwater, New York. This illusion series was posted to social media, beginning 25th August, 2026. The leaves of a sturdy young oak juxtaposed against the bird’s-eye view of the lake offers several symbolic pairs: darkness and light, newness and ancientness, groundedness and transcendence, reality and idealism.
Honeoye Lake: The fourth west and one of the smallest Finger Lakes, Honeoye is located around 30 miles from Rochester. Sunlight pervades its shallow depths, making it eutrophic – rich in nutrients that support plant and aquatic life. In the last couple hundred years, agriculture, development, and wastewater have left their mark on the lake, with excess nutrients still affecting its waters today.
This vantage point is 2,000 foot above sea level, making it my highest elevation painting to date. From here, the view hosts both the 10,000-year-old lake and the even older landscape, formed of bedrock millions of years ago. The elevated vantage point left me vulnerable to rapidly shifting cloud shadows and dramatic changes in light, making this both one of my most difficult and treasured matches.
