Herring Cove
I had the privilege to paint this quickly changing landscape illusion of Cape Cod Bay nestled on the shores of Herring Cove. In the distance to the left in the videos, you can see Race Point Lighthouse. Herring Cove is on the westernmost tip of the Cape Cod National Seashore, a protected area depended on by endangered and threatened species like the North Atlantic Right Whale and the Piping Plover. Herring Cove was named for its once-abundant population of herring that would run in the spring, but have suffered from overfishing.
Creating this piece was a humbling experience, as the cape’s weather shifted rapidly. While it complicated the illusion process, I learned the importance of respecting nature’s unpredictability and working in harmony with it. Surrounded by migratory birds, seals, and delicate dune grasses while filming, I gained a deeper understanding of how fragile Cape Cod’s ecosystems are. I hope to inspire more respect and action to protect these vital habitats from excessive human impact, unsustainable practices, and habitat loss.
