Framed Plein Air Color Match Illusion: Erie Canal, Gateway to the West
This is a framed plein air illusion of the Erie Canal, which I painted on site. I blocked out a portion of the water and painted everything that was missing. I posted the illusion on social media (see the full video here).
DEPICTION:
It was late spring when I painted this, and the water was soft and deep blues with dark shadows. I love the movement in the water and tried to capture it with my brushstrokes.
ERIE CANAL:
The Erie Canal is a 363-mile waterway that connects the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean via the Hudson River in upstate New York. (Source: History Channel.) The channel was considered an engineering marvel when it first opened in 1825. The Eire Canal is known as the Gateway to the West because it provided a direct water route from New York City to the Midwest, triggering large-scale commercial and agricultural development—as well as immigration—to the sparsely populated frontiers of western New York, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and points farther west. The canal transformed New York City into the young nation’s economic powerhouse, and in 2000 the U.S. Congress designated the Erie Canal a National Heritage Corridor.
