Common Reed Grass: Limited Edition Giclee Print
This signed, limited-edition giclée print captures my plein air illusion of common reed grass in Amherst, NY. Only 60 will be made, each hand-signed, titled, and numbered. Secure yours today.
Common Reed Grass
I’ve long thought common reed grass to be a fixture of the local landscape, with its gracefully tufted plumes. With this illusion, I learned it’s actually an invasive species, and was grateful for the opportunity to use this painting to raise awareness of its impact on the environment.
While this strain of reed grass is commonplace and non-invasive in Europe, North America’s ecosystem isn’t accustomed to it, which is why it spreads more than it can handle, crowding out native grasses. Removal of this plant is difficult, which is why we must take care to avoid spreading it through efforts like using shoe brush stations at nature areas.
This piece goes to show that beauty can be a complex thing, how a simple plant in the wrong place can reshape an entire ecosystem. Collect your print of this painting today as a marker of WNY local ecology and a conversation piece to share with friends and loved ones the realities of invasive species.
