Bradford Pear, Amherst: Framed Plein Air Color Match Illusion
This original framed painting captures a Bradford pear tree in full bloom, Amherst, New York. This illusion series was posted to social media, beginning 19 May, 2026. This painting represents dynamic journeys, balance, and the triumph of optimism.
Bradford Pear Tree: Bradford pear trees were originally introduced to the U.S. in the 1900s with the intention to crossbreed them with pear trees vulnerable to the disease fire blight, in attempt to strengthen them. They became an iconic part of springtime beauty ideals in postwar culture, with clouds of pillowy blossoms.
These trees became nonbeneficial to the environment for many reasons, including shading out native pioneer species and delaying natural forest regeneration. However, through this painting, we can both appreciate the beauty of this species while recognizing it is invasive and bringing the topic into everyday conversation. Through learning and talking, we can make proactive choices toward protecting biodiversity.
