Highland Lighthouse Necklace: Micro Painting on Quahog Shell

$269.00

This oil-painted necklace was created during my visit to Cape Cod’s Highland Lighthouse. Inspired by the stability and navigational value of the lighthouse, I painted the lighthouse on a quahog shell I found nearby. The shell’s rich, naturally purple rim serves as a base for the painting, adding visual interest and a connection to the region’s cultural history.

Details

  • Base: Sturdy Quahog shell, sterilized and preserved before painting

  • Oil painting with a high-gloss, enamel-like coating

  • 18-inch 18k solid chain with secure lobster claw clasp; 18k gold-plated bale

  • Presented in a black velvet box with ribbon

  • Certificate of authenticity included

History

Highland Lighthouse, commissioned by George Washington in the 1700s, has guided ships safely through the dangerous waters at the tip of Cape Cod. It’s one of the earliest lighthouses in the U.S., with a history of saving countless lives.

Symbolism

Lighthouses symbolize safety, stability, and guidance. This necklace serves as a reminder of strength and hope, guiding the wearer through challenges, like a lighthouse in a storm.

Quahog Shells

The quahog shell used in this piece honors the Cape Cod area’s rich history. For centuries, quahog shells were used by the Wampanoag people for food, currency, and trade, and continue to be abundant in local tidal flats.

Environmental Responsibility

I practice high-efficiency artmaking, meaning I create art with minimal waste, fully utilizing every supply.  By incorporating found objects like quahog shells into my artmaking, I create art that is both beautiful and resourceful.

Bring this piece into your collection, where it will serve as a guiding light on your journey and a reminder of the rich culture that flows from the Atlantic.

Note: The watermark on the images is for copyright purposes and does not appear on the purchased art.
