Happy the Hummingbird: Original Miniature Oil Painting with Rustic Mini-Easel
This is a miniature oil painting of a female ruby throated hummingbird. She perches on the branch and looks curiously at you, as if pausing to watch you before she takes off in flight again.
It’s based on a specific hummingbird I got rather attached to— I named her Happy, and she would come when I called her. I got to know her and well for a few years before I moved.

Panel is solid wood and triple gessoed. Sides of panel are painted.

RUBY THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS:
Hundreds of kinds of hummingbirds nest in the American tropics, and more than a dozen in the western U.S., but east of the Great Plains there is only the Ruby-throat. (Source: Audubon.) There it is fairly common in summer in open woods and gardens. Hovering in front of a flower to sip nectar, it beats its wings more than 50 times per second. Impressive migrants despite their small size, some Ruby-throats may travel from Canada to Costa Rica.
